I’ve noticed in many of my drafts that designated hitters slip a little further than they should. Sure, no one wants to throw roster flexibility out the window by owning a player who doesn’t qualify at any true position. But if you’re smart when you construct the rest of your team, you can get some nice bargains at DH. Last season, I hit the jackpot with Vladimir Guerrero in the 15th round. Don’t let the top four guys on this list slide too far. The others are basically just filling out the top 10, unless you’re in a deeper league…

David Ortiz, BOS DH – Can we all just agree that Ortiz is just a slow starter? When the infield dirt settles, his number are usually in the 30-HR, 100-RBI neighborhood. Once labeled “Big Pop-Up,” Ortiz may not tear it up in April, but he’ll achieve “Big Papi” status once again.

Vladimir Guerrero, BAL DH – He can’t field. He can’t run. But he can still hit. Vladi proved he’s not so washed up after all last season. Now he bounces over to Baltimore, where he should maintain a good level of his 2010 success in his age-36 season.

Adam Lind, TOR DH – Lind is too good of a hitter to be that bad again. If nothing else, he’ll hit you at least 25 bombs. At best, he could be a steal by returning to his 2009 form. I’d gamble on him.

Hideki Matsui, OAK DH – Ugh. So close to qualifying in the outfield. Many leagues require 20 games played at a position the previous season. Like Guerrero, Matsui only logged 18. Oh well, Matsui isn’t a bad option to clog up your DH spot. He should chip in 20 HR, 80 RBI and a .280 batting average.

Luke Scott, BAL DH – Raise your hand if you’ve picked up Scott when he gets hot, inserted him into your lineup only to see him suddenly slump. Then, you bench him and he instantly gets hot again. (My hand is raised.) His power comes in bunches, but you never know when.

Jim Thome, MIN DH – 40 years old. Limited at bats. Tough ballpark. None of it held Thome back. All the powerful lefty did was club 25 home runs in just 276 at bats. It will be frustrating to own Thome, but if a few Twins go down with injuries, you could be sitting on a small gold mine.

Travis Hafner, CLE DH – “Pronk” is only 33 years old. That’s young enough to make a bit of a comeback. He’s a very strong dude, so 20 home runs isn’t out of the question.

Jack Cust, SEA DH – Well, he should pile up at bats in Seattle. Unfortunately at bats isn’t a category in 99.9% of fantasy leagues. It’s a lot harder to get the ball out of Safeco, so plan on about 15 home runs to go along with a .250 batting average.

Dan Johnson, TB DH – The Rays are upgrading from Carlos Pena’s .196 BA to Johnson’s .198. If he hangs onto the first base job in Tampa Bay, you could get 20 home runs, but Johnson might not hit his weight (210 lbs).

Jake Fox, BAL DH – Only if you’re in an AL-Only League. A deeeeeeep AL-Only League.
