Round 1 NBA Playoffs Picks: Get Out the Chalk! By

It seemed like the NBA playoffs would never get here. Maybe that’s because we were forced to watch so much subpar basketball played by teams that had no interest in winning. Glad to see the tankers on the sidelines so we can watch some real hoops! This column will feature round 1 NBA playoff picks. I know, I know. It’s a little late and there’s already been a game played in each of the matchups. But it’s been mostly chalk so far, with only the 5 seeds beating the 4 seeds thus far. Get details about the NBA lines for the playoffs.

#1 Atlanta vs. #8 New Jersey
This is just a formality. If the Nets win one game, it will be considered an upset. Atlanta pretty much has a bye here, and they deserve it for having a tremendous regular season.

#2 Cleveland vs. #7 Boston
The Cavaliers shook off the early season troubles to round into form. Meanwhile, Boston shook up its roster with the Isaiah Thomas trade, which has paid big benefits. The Celts are scrappy, so I expect them to take a game at the new Garden. But that’s about it.

#3 Chicago vs. #6 Milwaukee
The Bucks are an up-and-coming team, but the playoffs are about defense and experience, which why the Bulls should cruise here. For Chicago, it’s all about staying healthy.

#4 Toronto vs. #5 Washington
The Wizards scored the mild upset in game one. I like their roster a bunch, but they haven’t elevated their collective game this season. With Wall and Beal entering their primes, not taking a step forward was a disappointment. I still look for the Raptors to advance here, making it chalkety chalk in the East.

#1 Golden State vs. #8 New Orleans
The Warriors rode the best record in the NBA to the top seed in the gauntlet that is the Western Conference. Many question whether their style is suited for the playoffs. I’m one of them. They’ll drop a game in the Big Easy, but shoot lights out and advance here.

#2 Houston vs. #7 Dallas
This is a nice draw for the Rockets, who edged out a few other teams for the all-important second seed. With the Howard-Harden dynamic duo and an aging Mavs roster, I see a clear path to round 2 for Houston.

#3 Los Angeles Clippers vs. #6 San Antonio
Crazy that the Spurs could’ve easily been the #2 seed in what turned out to be a logjam in the West. Instead, the two hottest teams in the league down the stretch must go face to face. I don’t see how this series doesn’t go seven games. But it’s definitely time for a changing of the guard and I think the defending champions will make an early exit from the 2015 playoffs.

#4 Portland vs. #5 Memphis
This is my only upset pick on the board. Pretty boring, but I call ‘em like I see ‘em. Portland has a nice collection of players who can score, but Memphis plays tough D and that’s the winning formula come playoff time.
