THE JOURNAL: The Fantasy Baseball All-Value All-Star Team

The Journal LogoWe’ve dropped into the abyss that is the All-Star Break. Four days without baseball games (that count). It’s a good time to reflect on the first half and pay some compliments to the overachievers. There has been no shortage of players that have returned incredible value on their draft positions…if they were even drafted. Here is The Fantasy Geek’s All-Value All-Star Team. One player at each position who has been the most pleasant surprise.

CATCHER – Devin Mesoraco, CIN
Mesoraco has been more like Meso-RAKE-o. Undrafted in most leagues, he’s been a huge find for shrewd owners who plucked him off the waiver wire early on. 16 homers and 45 RBI in just over 200 ABs…those are Piazza-type numbers.

FIRST BASE – Justin Morneau, COL
So many good options to choose from here. Jose Abreu certainly has impressed, but you still had to pay a decent price for him on draft day. Morneau, on the other hand, was pretty much left for dead. Now past his concussion issues, he’s back to putting up prime numbers, including a .312 average, 13 long balls and 60 RBI.

SECOND BASE – Brian Dozier, MIN
The top 5 second sackers in CBS’ ranks all could lay claim to this honor. But you had to pay more for Jose Altuve, Ian Kinsler and perhaps even Anthony Rendon. No one was entirely sold on Brian Dozier , despite solid 2013 numbers. His average won’t help you, but he’s on pace for nearly 30-30, so you can’t complain.

Amid resurgent seasons from the likes of Jimmy Rollins and Alexei Ramizrez, the best pure value here is Gordon. With 43 steals and the all-important double eligibility at 2B and SS, Dee definitely receives an “A.”

THIRD BASE – Todd Frazier, CIN
I’ve always like Frazier as a cheap source of power at the hot corner. But this season he’s delivering so much more than that. He’s surprisingly giving his owners plenty of average and speed to go with his impressive 19 home runs.

OUTFIELD – Michael Brantley, CLE
I’ll admit it. I didn’t realize how well Brantley was actually doing. 63 RBI? 15 HR? a .321 BA? Where did all that come from? I’m not sure anyone knows. However, you can be sure the owner who rolled the dice early on in 2014 are sitting pretty with a top 5 outfielder that didn’t cost a bundle.

STARTING PITCHER – Garrett Richards, LAA
Lots of good values at SP, as usual. But Richards wasn’t on anyone’s radar as a #2 or #3 SP, let alone a staff ace. With an 11-2 record, a 2.55 ERA and 127 punch outs, Richards may make plenty of owners rich by the conclusion of the season. Honorable mention to Scott Kazmir and Alfredo Simon.

CLOSER – Huston Street, SD
There haven’t been many bright spots for the Padres this season. But when they do hand the ball to their closer, they’ve won all but one game. Huston Street has given up a scant 18 hits in 33 IP. OF course, going forward major questions surround him. Will he get traded? Will he stay healthy? Only time will tell.

There you have ’em. The Fantasy Geek’s most valuable fantasy all-stars so far in 2014. Hopefully, you’re getting a nice break from managing your teams, so you can refocus and come on strong in the second half!
