September 30, 2011

Been a while since the last Journal entry, so I thought I’d throw together a quick post capping off the baseball season with a little football mixed in. It’s always a bittersweet feeling when fantasy baseball ends. It’s nice to breathe a sigh of relief about hanging on in title games and in roto standings. But it’s also sad to not have any lineups to set on Sunday nights. From time to time in our baseball analysis, we mention our own teams. We complain about one of our hitters who is slumping or talk about a recent trade we pulled off. Thus, I think it’s appropriate to report how we finished up in our leagues. So here goes…

Blog Wars Experts League (15-team, mixed, roto)

Our team really made a charge in September, but ultimately we fell just short of taking the title. Congratulations to Lester’s Legends who edged us in the final standings. That makes two straight years of second-place finishes in experts leagues.

Office Space Baseball League (12-team, mixed, H2H points)

This one was for TFG bragging rights as yours truly faced our very own Associate Editor, Si Korot. Si’s team surged down the stretch, clinching the top seed. My club stumbled in the final weeks, dropping to a #3 seed. But with some serious strategy, my guys pulled it together to peak at the right time. Layin’ The Lumbergh (note the Office Space theme) breezed through its 3 playoff games, winning by an average of 116 points. Here was how our battle went down in the finals.

California Penal League (12-team, mixed, 3-keeper, H2H categories)

This league is my baby. I started it with some friends from LA back in 1999. A while back, Si took over one of the franchises. Hats off to him, because this year, he claimed his first title (see below). Very exciting final with our buddy, Fybel. Came down to the back end of the Sox-Yankees doubleheader. When Papelbon came in in extra innings and got 4 outs, that gave Si the point in ERA and sealed the victory for Dawg Daze. (Too bad Papelbon couldn’t be that effective on Wednesday night!)

Other Stuff

Went a bit overboard on fantasy football this season. I’ve got 6 leagues going, ranging from a 10-teamer to a 16-teamer to a dynasty league. Mixed results so far. Got a fantasy hockey draft coming up for my 4-sport Super League. I don’t know anything about hockey. Still learning, but I hope my keepers, Malkin, Parise, Keith and rookie Seguin all fare better than last season.

Finally, I’ll leave you with my first ex-pro athlete follower on Twitter. I was maybe a little too excited when I got this notification in my inbox…

Alright, that’ll do it for this entry. Thanks for reading.
